Teotihuacan [May. 6th, 2012|05:56 pm]
The Image Collector
Capital of Mexico's largest pre-Hispanic empire, Teotihuacan boasts what our guide says is the second largest pyramid in the world, second only to the Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt. Here it is, the Pyramid of the Sun:

Then there is the Pyramid of the Moon:

From the top (half way up, really) of which you get this view, looking down what the Aztecs called the Avenue of the Dead, believing that it was lined with tombs built for the Teotihuacan kings.

This mural of a jaguar is the only one remaining on site

I just like this view for some reason

Lastly, from the back side of the Pyramid of the Sun at the end of the day. I didn't have time to climb it, so I walked around it instead.

I'm surprised they let people climb them. What a cool thing to be able to do though.
This sort of stuff really interests me.

there are a lot of restricted areas, but you do get to climb around quite a bit, which is cool. they have also done a lot of reinforcing and replacement of the original mortar. you can tell where they do this by the small black stones they embed in the new mortar. there are some in the next to last picture.

Remarkable place and ancient culture. To consider that that place was full of people who had developed a very advanced culture, only to fall to the Spanish soldiers and disease. Glad to see it preserved and open for viewing.
