The Image Collector
my favorite part of painting has always been in the generation of the idea, the pre-creation of the work in my mind or in sketches. don't get me wrong, the process of painting is a joy as well, but it pales to the germination of a new idea. a great deal of my past work involved coming up with a vision and then working until i realized it. the pleasure was concentrated at the beginning and end of the process. recently, i have begun to start paintings without a fully developed plan, allowing them to grow into life as i go. consequently, the process has become much more exciting, and i believe the end result is that i am a better artist, and i create more substantial works.

I have a lot of trouble with coming up with the ideas. I'm not very creative in that respect. My favorite part is making everything look right. Sketching and resketching. Evening things out. Getting just the right curve, or shading.

joy in the process is good. i don't think you can make an idea come. the trick is to grab it as it flashes by.
