Graffiti has been around since the beginning of time. People everywhere leave their mark, pee on the tree, so to speak, to say, "I was here, remember me!". This is evidenced in the simple tags in the image at the bottom of this post. What was interesting to me in Jordan was the permeation of western graffiti culture into the local genre, Almost all graffiti was in English. There is actually a movement to try to get taggers to start making their art in Arabic, but from what i saw, it isn't catching on.
