new painting, new technique [Sep. 26th, 2009|03:16 pm]
The Image Collector
finished a painting today. this is a new experiment for me. i had four of my photos printed archivally on canvas in black and white. i am then using them as the basis for paintings. i'm not colorizing them, so to speak, i am using them as the first layer of the painting and going from there. this one was of a dead bat i found a couple years ago and photographed lying on a paper towel. i loosely painted some green around the central image with a little overlap. then i glazed the whole canvas, first with nickel azo yellow, and then with a slightly redder color. then i made up a somewhat runic imaginary alphabet and wrote vertical lines of text with it, to the right, and then down from the bat in the middle. i am quite pleased with the result and would post a pic of it if i had my camera. i'll do it tomorrow.

Was wondering how you got that effect. At first it reminded me of some recent sci-fi/fantasy that adds magic to a 19th century industrialized world --- looked like a robot dragon. Then I recognized the bat. Was thinking you must have glued it on...prefer to hear you didn't. :) Can really see the quality/professionalism of your work, so much better than most of what hangs in galleries. Haven't seen your photographs yet, but not sure I want to hear you've put painting on the back shelf.

Not completely on the back shelf. I have a canvas that i am perpetually painting and changing in the studio, and I plan to print more on canvas and paint them.

Next time, sign your name so I know who you are!
