One of my favorite things about rafting the Grand Canyon was lying on my back on the raft after everyone else had gone to sleep at night looking up at the section of sky that was visible at whatever point of the trip we happened to stop. After a while, my eyes would adjust, and I found that I could make out all the details of the cliffs around me by starlight. No colors, just varying shades of grey. If I ever decide to become a landscape painter (remote possibility), I would like to paint a series of nightscapes. Not the city lights kind, but the desert by starlight. Next time you go camping, let the fire go out, and forgo the flashlight for a half hour or so. It really is spectacular.
