Ray Mine, Hayden, AZ

I have a love/hate relationship with mines. They are ugly but beautiful. They are destructive but necessary. They pollute, but they fuel the communication revolution. And the machinery floats the boat of the little boy in me. In the 90's, when I was building and maintaining cell towers, one of the ones I worked on was in the center of this mine on a little hill. I had to drive through the pit to get to it, which was awe inspiring. These trucks have 8' tires, as shown in this photo. Sadly, I never had a good camera back then. The little hill where the tower was? Completely subsumed by the tailing piles from ongoing operations at the mine. It now houses the visitor viewpoint, which you can drive to from the road.
