What is a good photo? [Dec. 12th, 2010|09:31 am]
The Image Collector
When I was in Petra, i posted this photo of a Bedouin boy playing in the rocks.

Everyone loved it and several commented that it was National Geographic material, a compliment which I appreciate but disagree with. I took several images of the boy and his siblings playing, jumping from the rocks into a sand pile. I chose the above to post because I thought most people would like it best, but this second one is actually my favorite.

I think it is much more interesting as a photo. As with a book or movie, sometimes it is better not to tell everything with a photograph. It is nice to have a little mystery, room for the viewer to make up their own story.

Plus I just like the composition of this one.

I like them both a lot. I think for a publication like National G, the first one is better. It shows the boy's face and his flying hair. And I think his outstretched arms add something. But his expression adds something. I agree with you about mystery being good. Less mystery is also good. But then there's also some mystery in the first one. :-)

I like both as well, but agree with you about the second one asking the viewer to use some imagination. James Nachtwey does that sometimes, and they become very powerful images.

I still like the first one best because the free air is all around him.
To me, in the second one we could think he is holding on to something above him.
Just my thoughts...

Re: sure about that?

Wow! Where's that? And is that the full name or does the tree obliterate some of it? Very cool. But not as an icon - just to send via email. :)
